Astronomy and astrology are the same

I was thinking whether Mercury crossing the sun is an astronomical event or an astrological one, when it hit me that both are the same. Here is the irrefutable proof.

Whom the Russians call 'cosmonaut', the Americans call 'astronaut'.
Ergo, 'cosmo = astro'. (Equation 1). So far, so good. It gets better now.

Astronomy and cosmology are used synonymously on most occasions.
Applying equation 1, astronomy and astrology are synonymous. Eureka!

Cosmo-: from Greek kosmos, meaning Universe

Astro-: from Greek astros, meaning star(s)

"Cosmonaut" fits the description of a space traveller better than "astronaut" (IMO)

Astronomy is the study of the stars, while Astrology is the study of the movements of the "stars" of the solar system and correlating those movements with terrestrial events.

I liked the correlations, including the "fact" that race car drivers are racists :D Reminded me of a mathematical fallacy
    1^0 = 1
    2^0 = 1

    Therefore, 1 = 2.

    One last question...forgive my ignorance.
Do the Indians in Tamil Nadu have the same dishes as the Tamils in Sri Lanka? I.e. String Hoppers, Kothu Roti etc.
    Ciao

Astronomy and astrology have not been related for centuries. Astronomy is simply the observation and measurement of celestial bodies, while astrology is an attempt to find some sort of "meaning" or "influence" in the planetary positions. The interesting thing, though, is that astrology, which gave birth to astronomy, has been out of date with the actual sky for most of modern history. Oddly enough, considering that astrology has to do with planetary movements, astrologers no longer look at the sky, and haven't for hundreds of years. No one ever bothered, over the years, to update or correct the various charts and tables from which astrological readings were made. There was finally an attempt to correct all the various charts just a few years ago, but it wasn't very successful. For this reason, no modern astronomer will ever be an astrologer, simply because the data used by astrologers bears no relation to what is actually seen in the sky

Astronomy is a science that compels us to seek beyond ourselves and our small world, a science of discovery that enriches our lives by exercising our brain and our intellect. It empowers you to think clearly and rationally. It improves and sharpens critical thinking skills.

Astrology disempowers you. By placing your future in the accidental configuration of planets and stars, you avoid taking responsibility for your actions, you fail to make decisions based on your own best self interest, and you give up the power to control your own destiny.

Pray, enlighten me, how astronomy sharpens our "critical thinking skills"?? Elaborate.

Secondly, the mathematical equations that govern the movement of the celestial bodies are set, so you don't need to look at the sky every time to see where some planet/comet is. So the sentence "astrologers no longer look at the sky" is superfluous. You can compute positions of heavenly bodies based on the equations. Forget Kepler?

You say "No one ever bothered, over the years, to update or correct the various charts and tables from which astrological readings were made. There was finally an attempt to correct all the various charts just a few years ago, but it wasn't very successful." Please give me a reference. Wishy-washy sentences do not an argument make. Who made this study? Who tried to correct/ reconcile the data? Where was this done? Is there a scientific paper? (After all you seem to be a rationalist, you must back your arguments with proof !!)

Real scientific temper requires an impartial and dispassionate mind, a mind not swayed by prevalent prejudices or opinion or theories. Read the basic principles of astrology before you give your opinion on destiny, free-will etc. What is your opinion on Karma? Without understanding Karma, trying to understand astrology is is redundant.

"By placing your future in the accidental configuration of planets and stars, you avoid taking responsibility for your actions, you fail to make decisions based on your own best self interest, and you give up the power to control your own destiny.: -- shows very clearly that you have no clue what astrology is. Your will is in your own hands, you make your own destiny. Astrology merely points out the constraints. It makes no claim to unravel your destiny; it merely casts a guiding light. You can either light a lamp or curse the darkness.

Finally, I will quote what one of the greatest scientific minds of the last millenium, Newton, said to Edmund Halley (an astronomer of no mean standing)- "I have studied these things, you have not."
